lighters based on U.S. Design Patent 77861
Fay Mfg. produced a broad range of pocket and table lighters based on the mechanism pictured in Henry Schiff's 1928 U.S. Design Patent 77861 for a desk lighter. The patent drawing shows a double bar lift arm mechanism with uniquely shaped snuffer and exposed sparking wheel. Though sometimes advertised using the "Elgin" brandname trademarked by Schiff in 1927, these lighters are not branded usually. Several pocket lighter body shapes and styles were produced using brass, steel and bakelite plastic. Fay similarly offered an eclectic array of table lighters with figural and decorative bases. (EB)
