Kaschie K1 "Sesam" & "Candelite"
At least four versions of these full automatic German candlestick table lighters were produced. The original version has a flat metal top and was first produced around 1921. The mechanism of this first version is marked as made in Austria and the base made in Germany. These candlestick lighters are not branded Kaschie, they were likely produced before Kaschie began manufacturing lighters. The German-made base is marked (531). Joe Breininger has identified Ludwig Heymann in Nürnberg as the likely manufacturer in Germany.
Produced during the early-to-mid 1930s, the second candlestick version is the Kashie K1 "Sesam". It uses a circular base similar to the original model and introduced the figural candle-like snuffer. A 1936 catalog states they were offered with red, white and yellow candle finishes, and custom colors were offered. This version of the K1 was also sold by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. rebranded as the "Candelite".
For the second version of the K1, the original round footed base was replaced with a more stable flat, diamond-shaped base. Introduced in the mid-to-late 1930s, this version uses the same basic design pictured in Schieder's 1951 U.S. design patent.
Likely produced after World War 2, the third K1 version adds a safety screw that locks the candle-shaped mechanism to the base. (EB & JB)
