Bigney Cigar Lighter

return to Bigney index

Even though it's simple ignition mechanism is based on Conrad Hubert's 1909 patented design, Bigney Cigar Lighters were first produced during the late 1920s. At least three sizes were offered with leather coverings, painted and enamel finishes, engine turned and patented inlay designs. Models were produced from plated brass and EPNS silver. Most examples are branded "S.O.B.Co." and marked "U.S.Patent 1022140". The "Bigney Lighter" name is visible once the fuel screw is removed. Some variations have a metal snuffer attached inside the hinged lid.

Design variations of the Bigney Lighter were produced branded as "Collis" and "Miller". Collis lighters are slightly shorte than the Bigney and feature a redesigned lid clasp, riveted sparking wheel without snuffer, and a flush fuel screw. Collis branding only appears on the fuel screw, the lighter bodies are unmarked. These production variations models were likely produced for third-party resale, promotion and/or advertising purposes.
